Editorial
Journal of Exercise Physiologyonline
This April issue (Vol 2,
No 2, 2000) of JEPonline
represents the journal’s second year in existence. It is a journal
that currently has free access to all who can access the internet, requires
no financial costs by the authors to submit or publish, and provides two
versions of manuscripts (HTML and PDF) for easy on-line reading or printing.
This April issue also happens to be
the largest single issue of JEPonline
to date, with eight manuscripts. When you view the contents of this
issue, pay attention to each of the topics and location of the corresponding
authors. You will see that exercise physiologists and clinicians
from around the world view JEPonline
to be a viable alternative to more traditional research publication. The
April issue provides research that either directly or indirectly represents
countries not only from the US, but also from South America, Great Britain,
Spain, Australia and Switzerland. An international presence has been
a consistent feature of the journal, and clearly reveals the “power” of
the internet to provide free research dissemination across borders and
oceans. Surely this is how research dissemination should be; unlimited
by finances, politics, surface mail, or language barriers.
As editor-in-chief, future issues of
JEPonline
appear to be equally large. The July issue should contain two ASEP
Procedures Recommendations, and there are currently 10 additional manuscripts
in review. This relatively high rate of submissions to the journal
has posed some problems in the review process. However, in past reports,
I have indicated that we are currently restructuring at the editorial level
to expedite the review process. These growing pains are to be expected
and ASEP is aware of the need to eventually require additional editorial
assistance.
Finally, the ASEP Board of Directors
is taking steps to have JEPonline
included in the many internet-based medical research search programs (e.g.,
PubMed). Such inclusion will make the journal even more visible,
allow authors greater visibility of their published work, and attract even
more submissions.
Thank you for your time, support and
continued interest.
